The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has redressed the lopsidedness in the appointment of its General Managers following a report carried by SHIPS & PORTS calling attention to the imbalance in the appointments.

It was gathered that of its 22 General Managers appointed at the time, 15 were of northern origin while only seven were from the southern parts of the country.

The disproportionate appointments was said to be in contravention of the Federal Character Principle as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution, which stipulates that appointments to public service institutions at all levels must reflect the linguistic, ethnic, religious, and geographic diversity of the country to check the problem of inequality and marginalisation.

But with the recent appointment of three new General Managers from the southern part of the country, the GM cadre appears fairly distributed across the nation’s six geopolitical zones.

The new General Managers are Edosomwan Aimuamwosa Anthony (Edo State) as GM Superannuation; Engr. Ajibola Sylvester (Lagos State) as GM Administration and Engr. Omiwole Olukayode (Osun State) as GM, Health, Safety and Environment (HSE).

Also appointed as General Managers are Adah Ambrose (Benue State) as GM ICT; Umar Abubakar (Zamfara State) as GM Tariff & Billing and Khalil Mohammed Jamil (Zamfara State) as GM Security.

All the appointments, except that of Edosomwan Aimuamwosa Anthony, take immediate effect. Anthony’s become effective 2nd October, 2020, when he’ll take over from the present GM Superannuation, Isa Suwaid, who will retire on October 1.

In addition to the new General Managers, three Principal Managers were also promoted to Assistant General Managers. They are Okeke Simeon Okeke (Port Manager, Delta Ports); Alhassan Ismaila Abubakar (Port Manager, Onne Port); Engr. Yunusa Ibrahim Anji (Port Manager, Rivers Port) and Obaoye Margaret Olayinka (Abuja Liaison Office).

The new appointments were announced in a memorandum from the NPA Managing Director’s office, dated 10th August 2020 with the reference number MD/13/MCORRES/VOL.XX/494, and have been ratified by the NPA Board.
