History was made in Rivers state as the Nigerian Navy uses sports for the first time to unite and bond with her host communities. The Navy through the Nigerian ship NNS Pathfinder over the week inaugurated football and volleyball competitions with her host Rumuolumeni community in Port Harcourt.
Speaking during the occasion, Commodore Majid Ibrahim said the sports are tailored towards forcing the youths to channel their energy to something valuable and rewarding as sports will enhance their talents.
According to Majid, “it is our belief that the games would serve as an avenue to boost our friendship with our community as well as promote peace. The competition would also serve as an avenue to engage youths in meaningful ventures rather than them engaging in activities that are inimical to the society.
“We are thankful to the commander of NNS Pathfinder Commodore Sam Bura for finding it worthy to organize such a competition that will impact both on our personnel and neighbors,“ said Majid
Majid also added that it is not only the host community that will benefit from the competition but the mental and physical fitness of the officers and ratings will be impacted as well.
A member of the local organising committee for the games Mr. Victor Ederekumor expressed confidence that the games will help promote peace in the community. The games according to him will enable the youths to be engaged in meaningful activities as against getting involved in criminalities.

Continuing He said “We also believe that the success of the games will boost the confidence of the host community to share credible information that borders on security with NNS Pathfinder. The competition will go a long way to discourage our youths from indulging in secret cultism, pipeline vandalism, robbery and thuggery among other vices.
The Paramount ruler of the host community, Rumuolumeni Eze Ndubueze Olumeni commended the Navy for organising the games and appealed to them to make it an annual event.
The early results of the games showed that in the game of volleyball NNS Pathfinder hammered the Rumuolumeni All-Stars 3-0. The Pathfinder did not get a smooth sail in football as they were held to a 3-3 draw by the Rumuolumeni academy.
