Akeredolu & Fasakin
Ondo state governor Mr. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has called on the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency NIMASA to partner with his government towards the development and enhancement of the waterways in the state.
The governor lamented that though the waterways are regarded all over the world as an important route for transportation, unfortunately, it is not the case in Nigeria. He decried the neglect of the waterways in the state by successive governments pointing out that by so doing they missed out on harnessing a veritable source of commerce and revenue which would have accrued to the state.
The Ondo state governor made the statements when the Executive Director of NIMASA in charge of operations Mr. Rotimi Fasakin led a high powered delegation to see him in the government house in Akure, the state capital. Receiving the entourage with hope and expectations Akeredolu called for a concerted effort to be made in the area of keeping the waterways in Ondo state clean, safe, secure and free from pollutants e.g water hyacinth plants.

He advocated joint maintenance agency to properly clean and maintain the waterways so as to harness the great potential of the various waterways in the state. The governor recalled how the riverine locals had built and maintained the boats they used in navigating the waterways for centuries stressing that with support there could be a development and improvement of various boats used in river navigation.
The Executive Director of NIMASA Operations in his response promised that the agency will activate the Araromi-Lagos waterway and make it a popular and lucrative water transportation route between Ondo and Lagos States. He commended the Ondo state government for their effort towards making the state waterways safe,
Explaining the reason of their interest in Ondo state According to him” all these are geared towards making the impact of NIMASA felt in a larger dimension and to create awareness among the people through informing and sensitising them about the viable alternative of patronizing water transportation.
