The Managing Director of Nigeria Port Authority NPA Mrs. Hadiza Bala-Usman has been honoured with the Outstanding Leadership Public Sector Award by Daar Communications Ltd owners of the African Independent Television AIT in Abuja, Nigeria’s federal capital territory.

The award was presented to her by the Chairman of the 2017 DAAR Communications Award Ceremony Prince Julius Adelusi-Adeluyi at the Ladi Kwali Hall of Sheraton Hotels and Towers, Abuja. While presenting the award to her Prince Adeluyi extol the virtues and exemplary leadership of the Mrs. Usman while holding the fort as the NPA boss and commended her sterling performance in the quest to turn around the fortunes and operations of the NPA.

The award was given to Mrs. Usman for Outstanding Leadership in Public Sector Transparency and Open Budget system. She was praised for enthroning transparency in the operations of accounts and budget of the nation apex port authority.

Speaking at the occasion while contributing to a national discourse on youth employment as part of the event marking the DAAR Communication Award Ceremony Mrs. Usman called for the provision of adequate vocational training for the youths of Nigeria by all tiers of government in order to equip them with skills needed for gainful employment.

The NPA boss also canvassed for the establishment of more vocational training institutions so as to accommodate many youths who are willing to acquire skills that will make them self-employed. To support the youth to actualize their dreams the government should enact relevant legislation and policies that will aid them.

Usman also suggested the support of the industrial sector of the country by the government as a means of encouraging the employment of youths in the country. Apart from the industrial sector other sectors of the sector with high human labour employment such as sports and entertainment industry e.g films, music, comedy should be encouraged by the government in order to employ the millions of youths looking for employment.

She attributed youth restiveness such as Boko Haram and Niger Delta Militants to many years of neglect of the youths by the successive government in Nigeria.

The DAAR Communication Discourse titled “Youth Employment: A Time Bomb was part of the activities marking the DAAR Communication Award 2017.  The award ceremony had Mrs. Seinye Lulu Briggs as the Keynote Speaker and Professor Akpan Ekpo as Chairman of the occasion.
